NY man holds 7 hostages at gunpoint overnight

A man who held seven people hostage overnight inside an apartment building in Syracuse, N.Y., has been found dead.

Police were responding to a report of an armed robbery at around 10 p.m. Sunday when shots began flying at them from a second-floor apartment. Police say no officers were injured.

Authorities say seven people were held hostage, but six were rescued around midnight.

The standoff ended after the last hostage told police he believed the gunman was dead.

Police Chief Gary Miguel (mih-GEHL') says a SWAT team entered the building at around 4 a.m. Monday and found the gunman's body in a stairwell. Miguel says it wasn't clear if the gunman had shot himself or was killed by police.

The gunman's name hasn't been released.
