S.C. winner claims $260M Powerball prize

The South Carolina Education Lottery introduced Solomon Jackson, Jr. at a news conference Tuesday afternoon in Columbia.

Jackson, a lifelong resident of Columbia, said he bought the ticket with the intention of supporting South Carolina schools. He refused Tuesday to say much about himself or his plans, including whether he will take his winnings annually over three decades or in a $129 million lump sum.

"I paid $2 and they threw it right back at me," Jackson said.

The single winning ticket for the Aug. 19 drawing was sold at a gas station and convenience store next to a Walmart in Columbia.

The Powerball jackpot is the largest ever won with a ticket bought in South Carolina, which has the nation's fifth-highest state unemployment rate. Lottery officials say there's a good chance the winner lives in the state.

The game is now played in 30 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
