The remains of a woman found Sunday near Oyster Creek, about 60 miles south of Houston, are believed to be those of a missing Kinston mother, according to authorities in Fort Bend County, Texas.

Chief Deputy Craig Brady said that Raleigh police detectives who traveled to Texas to look for Laura Jean Ackerson, 27, believe the remains are hers.

It appears she was killed in North Carolina and that her body was taken to Texas, Brady said. The remains were dismembered.

A suspect has been detained, but his name has not been released.

Raleigh police detectives confirmed that they traveled to Texas to continue their investigation into Ackerson's disappearance, but declined to release any other information.

Joe Garza, a crime scene witness, said he saw authorities take two coolers wrapped in saran wrap, a gun and a saw out of a house.

Ackerson was last seen in Raleigh on July 13 and was reported missing two days later after she failed to pick up her two sons from their father in Raleigh. Her white 2006 Ford Focus was found in the Camden Crest Apartments, near Glenwood Avenue and Lynn Road, on July 20.

Family and friends have said that she and her sons' father were involved in a custody battle and that their relationship had been "volatile."

How sad...... what is this world coming to? Now all 3 kids are without parents, they had such a beautiful family (facebook)why couldn't they just blended it and kept it moving! My prayers goes out to them all ! mjlt3 July 25, 2011 11:12 a.m.

Because she obviously knew her ex was an evil man and wanted her kids out of there. Too bad it came with the ultimate price for her & her kids.

My heart just breaks for those precious babies! WHAT is wrong with these men? It is so selfish, so needless. We all must pray for peace in this crazy world!

OMG, look at those 2 litle precious babies in the picture. I feel so sorry for them and their families going through this grief. How in the world would h have exprected tho get the kids anyway after killing their mother. He would be in jail. It is always the children who suffer because of selfish parents. He and that lady need to rot in jail and/or get the death penalty.

Yet again!!! a man decides that killing the mother of his children is the answer to a custody battle. What kind of person thinks he can look into the trusting eyes of his children for the rest of their lives and not feel horrible guilt over killing their mother? There's a special place in Hell for those people right next to the ones who kill children.
