RALEIGH, N.C. — A passerby heard gunshots and found a wounded man, who later died, outside a vacant home on N.C. Highway 98 in northern Wake County Sunday morning, Sheriff Donnie Harrison said.

James Peterson told WRAL News that he heard a single gunshot as he was walking to a convenience store around 8:30 a.m.

He hid behind some bushes and approached a house at 4501 Durham Road, which is N.C. 98 at that point. He saw a silver sedan pull out of the driveway and head toward Durham.

Peterson said he went closer and saw a Hispanic man, in his mid to late 40s, who had been shot in the neck.

"He flagged down a deputy, so we were basically right at the scene moments after it happened," Harrison said.

The man was rushed to WakeMed but was pronounced dead there. His identity hasn't been released.

Investigators asked law enforcement agencies in the area to look out for the silver getaway car, Harrison said. Investigators also looked at surveillance tape from the convenience store about a quarter-mile away.

A Ford SUV was parked outside the house, which had a for-sale sign in front of it. A real estate agent said the home had been on the market for about a year.

"That house has been up for for sale for the past six to eight months, so I didn't know anyone was living in it, period," neighbor James Tilley said. The sheriff said investigators believe the home was vacant.

Tilley said that a lot of drug deals happen outside a business across the street from the house.

Deputies strung crime scene tape around the house, and agents with the County-City Bureau of Identification also came out to the scene.

"We are following up on some leads right now," Harrison said. "It is under investigation and will remain under investigation until we find out who did the shooting."
