DURHAM, N.C. — Durham police are investigating a 22-year-old man's report that he was robbed, kidnapped, beaten and shot at by three unknown men on July 4.

The man, whose name was not released, told officers he was walking near Liberty and Dillard streets when three men in a blue Chevrolet Caprice approached him.

He said the men robbed him at gunpoint, forced him into the trunk and then drove to the area of Old Oxford Highway and Snow Hill Road where they took him into the woods and beat him with a baseball bat. He said his captors then forced him into the water and fired shots at him, but he was not wounded.

A Durham police officer found the man walking in the 700 block of Old Oxford Highway around 1 a.m. on July 5.

One captor was described as a black man in his early 20s, 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall with a small build. He had a short crew cut and a goatee.

A second captor was described as a black man in his mid-20s, 5 feet 11 inches to 6 feet 1 inch tall and 140 to 160 pounds. He had short hair, a goatee and noticeable acne scars. He was left-handed.

The third captor was described as a black man, 6 feet to 6 feet 3 inches tall with a slim build. He had a medium-length Afro hairstyle and noticeable acne scars. All three men were armed with guns.
