HENDERSON, N.C. — A hearing scheduled for Friday could determine whether a 15-year-old can be charged as an adult in the shooting death of his mother.

The 15-year-old, whose name hasn't been released, faces a charge of first-degree murder in the death of Letitia Hammond, 33.

Police said that Hammond's 13-year-old daughter found her mother's body in their home on South Carolina Avenue on June 15 and called 911.

Authorities haven't disclosed a possible motive in the case but said it wasn't a robbery.

The 15-year-old was arrested Tuesday, and he is being held in the custody of Vance County's juvenile services.

"This is a very difficult time, a very emotional time, because this is a loving family," said Rev. C. J. Dale, the pastor at Burning Bush Christian Church in Henderson, where Hammond attended. "They had a wonderful relationship, and that's the truth."

Dale said Thursday that, in the years that he knew Hammond, she only wanted the very best for her three children.

"She said to me, 'Rev. Dale, I just want to save my son and make sure he doesn't get in trouble,'" Dale said.
