— The road rage incident on Interstate 540 late Wednesday occurred after miles of jockeying between both drivers, a source told WRAL News Friday.

Kyle Fiske, 23, of Raleigh, and Danielle Johnson, 20, of Cary, were westbound on I-540, near U.S. Highway 70, when a silver Acura pulled up on their left and a man inside opened fire, police said.

A bullet traveled through the front driver's-side and passenger-side windows, but missed both people, police said. Fiske's arm was cut by shattered glass.

The couple pulled into Raleigh-Durham International Airport, and one of them ran to the Southwest Airlines ticket counter in Terminal 1 and asked for help. RDU medical staff treated them there.

Investigators said their preliminary findings point to road rage as the reason for the shooting.

A source familiar with the investigation said Friday that the couple's car initially was driving alongside the Acura on Capital Boulevard, and they cut the Acura off as they approached I-540. The two cars then jockeyed on the highway for miles before the shot was fired, the source said.

Police said the Acura is an early 2000s model with tinted windows and custom rims.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Raleigh Crime Stoppers at 919-834-4357.

ChattyCat....cutting someone off doesn't give them the right to shoot you. That said, all these shootings make me feel like i'm back in Los Angeles.

There are some groups of folks that just think they are above the law and do not have to follow speed limits or anything else. Pretty easy to pick em out! Sounds to me like they were all at fault. I am sure that they will learn nothing from this incident.

It's scary that some think the punishment for accidentally cutting someone off in traffic is to get shot at.

Send the ones with the guns back home to Durham where they belong.

Yeah, I figured the driver of the car that was shot into provoked the other driver. He should be charged with reckless driving and putting the woman in the car in danger.

Thank God it's was not random. Oh wait, that mean all bad driver are suspect?

Notice how the 911 operator in the audio clip would rather send them driving back toward Raleigh, without knowing the extent of their medical condition, rather than let them seek the fastest form of help at the airport? I mean, we wouldn't want to sully the image of RDU just to save a life, would we?

There are times to just back off and let the other go on. This couple missed that point!
