Local couples take cues from royals
The Wake County Courthouse is no Westminster Abbey, but dozens of local couples took a cue from Prince William and his bride Kate Middleton and made Friday their wedding day.
Posted — UpdatedOn a normal day, magistrates in Wake County officiate five or six weddings. On Friday, that total jumped to more than 30.
Beverly and Leroy Durant thought the courthouse would be a simple, quiet choice for their vows. But the link to the royal wedding made their day a bigger deal. It also provides a nice reminder for Leroy on anniversaries to come.
"This is a blessed day for everyone," he said. "It's something we will always remember. It's history."
As Mike and Bonnie Reeve joined their lives, Magistrate Dexter Williams took some license with their names.
"I've been calling everybody the duke and duchess of Wake County this week," he laughed.
Applications for wedding licenses were also up Friday in Wake County. Usually, the Register of Deeds sees about 25-30, but that number doubled to 60 on the day when wedding bells rang all around the world.
