Steven Tandy and Cassandra Miller, both 18, had double car trouble Thursday afternoon.

First, her car stalled as they rode down Southwest Cary Parkway. They pulled over to investigate, turned on the hazard lights and opened the hood.

Both were standing in front of the stopped car when their troubles were compounded by the driver who rear-ended her car, pushing it into them.

"We just closed the hood, and he hit us," she said.

Tandy said he thought, "Holy crap, this is a car hitting me."

Both were thrown 10 feet.

"I just remember the crunch," she said. "My head made a huge hole in my windshield, and Steven's head made a second hole."

Tandy has a broken nose, and both have cuts and bruises.

"I was screaming and shaking and crying," Miller said.

Both said they realize how much worse it could have been.

"I walked out of the hospital that night," a grateful Tandy said.
