SANFORD, N.C. — Authorities arrested two men near Sanford late Thursday morning after a 45-minute vehicle chase that went on for about 20 miles in both Lee and Moore counties.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said a trooper in Vass tried to stop a gold 2010 Chevrolet Malibu traveling 81 mph in a 60-mph zone in Moore County when the pursuit started on northbound U.S. Highway 1 and continued into Lee County.

At one point, the vehicle hit a Sanford police car. The chase ended around 10:30 a.m. near downtown Sanford when the car hit a tree in a neighborhood on Underwood Street.

“I was coming home from work and heard a loud boom,” resident John Pittman said. “We saw the guys jumping and bailing for the woods, and then it was just mayhem with troopers and detectives and policemen and a helicopter – a little excitement for the day.”

The driver, Brandon Lashun Ingram, 29, of 102 Stoney Drive in Durham, was charged with speeding to elude arrest, driving while license revoked, speeding, careless and reckless driving and a stop-sign violation.

He was in the Moore County jail Thursday afternoon.

Court records indicate he had outstanding warrants in Wake County for possession of cocaine, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, carrying a concealed weapon and felony eluding and speeding from police.

He has spent approximately seven of the past 12 years in prison on attempted armed robbery, kidnapping and drug-related convictions, among others, according to state Department of Correction records.

The passenger, Bruce Antonio Douglas, 21, of 606 Dogwood St. in Fuquay-Varina, was charged with resist delay and obstruct. He was out of jail Thursday afternoon on bond.

DOC records show that he has a single previous misdemeanor conviction for possession of drug paraphernalia.
