Authorities are searching for the person who shot a man in the head along a Knightdale street on Wednesday night, police said.

Police said a group of young people were walking along Laurens Way when the shooter, who was standing on the corner about a block away, fired at them. The shooting happened around 8 p.m. near the corner of Parkside Commons Drive.

The shooter fled when a nearby vehicle pulled up.

There is no description available of the vehicle or the suspect, police said.

The victim, whose name was not released, was taken to WakeMed Hospital. His condition was not available.

Knightdale Police Chief Shawn Brown said neighbors are on edge.

“The neighbors are concerned just with the different crimes that have been happening in Knightdale and also we just had our first homicide about a year ago now. Hopefully, we will be able to solve whatever happened tonight as quickly as that one,” he said.

“This is not a bad neighborhood. I’ve raised all three of my sons here and most of the kids here I’ve known since they were small,” neighbor Tracie Crumel said. “It’s unfortunate but it could have happened in any neighborhood.”
