FREMONT, N.C. — A Wayne County man faces charges that he shot and killed his girlfriend at their Fremont home late New Year's Day.

Tom Effler, with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, said that deputies and Fremont police officers responded to reports of a person being shot on Bentwood Drive around 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

They found Teresa Pierce Harrelson, 49, who had been shot several times, Effler said. Harrelson was transported to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Investigators filed a murder charge against her boyfriend,

Honorio Grajales, 44, of 104 Bentwood Drive, is charged with murder. He is being held without bond in the Wayne County jail. Investigators are trying to determine whether he is in the country legally.

Friends of Harrelson said Monday that the dispute might have started over Grajales's jealousy over an ex-boyfriend.

Harrelson's friend Martha Jones was among several people visiting the couple's home on New Year's Day.

"We were sitting around talking, and he went in there and got a gun and shot her three times with it," Jones said.

Bruce Eastwood, a friend of Harrrelson, was not at the home on New Year's Day, but has talked with several people who witnessed the dispute.

"He got up off the couch (and) shot her three times. He made it out the door. He went out and shot her two more times," Eastwood said.

Those who knew the couple said they never suspected it would reach this level of violence.

"It's very shocking," Jones said.
