ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — A band teacher at a middle school near Roanoke Rapids is off the job and under arrest after allegations that he showed a pornographic video to students.

Archie Sheldon McLeod III, 51, of 174 Graystone St., Roanoke Rapids, was charged Tuesday with 11 felony counts of disseminating obscene material to a minor under the age of 16 and 11 misdemeanor counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

He was in the Halifax County Jail Tuesday afternoon under a $40,000 bond.

Investigators said McLeod, a band and chorus teacher at William R. Davie Middle School, showed the video to at least 11 students, ages 12 to 14, in a classroom during school hours on Monday.

Halifax County Schools spokesman Keith Hoggard said McLeod was placed on unpaid suspension Tuesday morning, pending the final outcome of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office’s investigation.

Investigators became aware of the allegations after Robert Hester, an eighth-grader in McLeod’s class, used a cell phone to record McLeod playing the video on a laptop for students.

Hester said McLeod stopped showing the video when he realized he was being filmed.

Hester went home and told his mother, who reported the incident to school administrators.
