RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina appears to have a love affair with credit cards. A new report from TransUnion, one of the three credit reporting agencies, shows that North Carolina consumers carry the highest credit card balance of anyone in the continental U.S.

North Carolinians carry an average of $5,640 per person in credit card debt. The only two states with higher debt were Alaska at $7,159 and Hawaii at $5,716

Even though North Carolinians carry high balances, they are doing better than most states at paying their cards on time. Less than 1 percent of users were more than 90 days late in a payment.

The national delinquency rate has dropped by 24 percent since this time last year, which could be because more people are cutting up their cards. TransUnion says more than 8 million people stopped actively using credit cards during the past year.
