Pine Level shooting stemmed from argument, police say
Pine Level police charged a man with murder early Saturday. Police Chief Keith Sparks said it could be the first murder in the town's history, and it involved the son of a town leader.
Posted — UpdatedStefan Gudac, 23, is charged in the death of Devin Barber, of Smithfield.
Stefan Gudac is the son of Pine Level's commissioner of water and sewer, Anthony Gudac. He lives with his father at 417 E. Pine St., where he had some friends over Friday night, Sparks said.
Stefan Gudac argued with Barber, police said, and then shot him shortly before 1:30 a.m.
Because of his father's office, Sparks said he called the State Bureau of Investigation to help with the case.
Barber was shot three times. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at Johnston County Medical Center.
Gudac was taken into custody at the scene of the shooting. He was being held at the Johnston County Jail without bond.
Police were talking to witnesses and others who might have been in the home at the time of the shooting.
