SNOW HILL, N.C. — A head-on collision in Greene County Friday evening killed three people and critically injured a girl, according to the state Highway Patrol.

State troopers said that an SUV crossed the center line and struck an oncoming car on U.S. Highway 258 north of Snow Hill around 5:45 p.m. The SUV then caught on fire.

The SUV driver, Shirley Francis Mitchell, 24, of Greenville, and the driver of the car, Jonathan Lucas, 25, of Snow Hill, died instantly.

Two passengers from the car were taken to area hospitals. Chiquita Taylor, 20, died of her injuries at Lenoir Memorial. Another young female, whose name and age authorities have not released, was in critical condition at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

Troopers said that the car was registered to Debbie Faye Taylor, 42, of Snow Hill, but that she was not in the car at the time of the crash.

The SUV was so badly burned that investigators couldn't determine its make or model or read its license plate, troopers said. The fire damage to the vehicles caused delays in identifying the victims.
