Sales, hiring hot at Mebane's new Tanger Outlet mall

Posted November 7, 2010

— Sales and hiring were hot during the opening weekend of the new Tanger Outlet mall in Mebane.

Shoppers hoping to cash in on bargains lined up outside the mall before it opened Sunday morning.

"You put 'outlet' on anything, and people automatically think it's a good deal," shopper Clara Andrews said.

Shoppers Adrian Long and and Latoya Bryant got up early to check out the Coach outlet store.

"I love it, so I am here to see what deals they have," Bryant said.

Kathy Hackshaw, the mall's general manager, said that opening weekend has exceeded retailers' expectation, and some stores are already hiring new workers.

"We knew we would be busy, but they are even busier than they thought they would be," Hackshaw said. "They don't expect it to slow down between now and the holidays, so some of them need more people."

More than 3,000 applicants waited in line during a job fair at the mall this past fall. Eight hundred positions were filled.

Another 55 full- and part-time are available. (See a list of all job openings.)

"I would get out here this week, if you want a job," Hackshaw said. "Knock on some doors and see if they need anybody."

Crowds at the mall opening also provided a quick buck for nearby businesses. Some charged as much as $20 for parking.

Hope that the Tanger management and Mebane city hall get it together quick. You can't shut down 2 exits on the interstate, block a hospital off from its only enterance shut down all the other local businesses(don't you know that has produced alot of goodwill) every weekend from now till Christmas.

Still can't figure out how Tanger got away with opening with only 1 enterance and exit ,the other is due to be finished until after the holidays. I know for sure that Tanger management and Mebane will hear from several corp. offices this morning about the handling of the opening. Expect shopping center owners not to be so gracious with the use of their parking facilities from now on.

The 55 job openings will be for security guards, groundskeepers, and janitors. That place was a nasty mess last night when I drove thru about 10
