Triangle nonprofit helps clean, repair vet's home
A nonprofit group in the Triangle is helping a Vietnam veteran in Durham with yard work and home repairs at no cost.
Posted — Updated“I really appreciate it. I’m elated. I don’t know what to say,” veteran William Austin said Saturday.
Austin lost his leg when he stepped on a land mine in Vietnam.
“I was an infantryman, called “Grunt,” on the front lines,” he said.
Volunteers also helped clean Austin’s gutters, repair his roof and power-wash the siding.
“I’m a veteran myself, so this is like taking care of your brothers in a way,” Rebuilding Together volunteer Frank Barthold said.
Rebuilding Together will make home repairs for two other veterans in Durham this fall. Their efforts are made possible through partnerships with Sears and the Heroes at Home program, which raises money to make life-changing renovations to veterans' homes.
