Raleigh police officer involved in motel shooting

Raleigh police responded to a call of an “unknown nature” to the motel, at 3520 Maitland Drive, at 4:22 a.m., but investigators haven’t released further details about what led to the shooting.

Raleigh Police Chief Harry Dolan is expected to make a statement Thursday at 3:30 p.m., police spokesman Jim Sughrue said.

The victim, whose name was not released, was taken to WakeMed in Raleigh. The extent of injuries was not clear.

Also unclear was whether the officer fired the gunshots that wounded the victim, who a motel clerk says was a woman who checked in a couple days ago with a baby.

A motel clerk called 911 around 4 a.m. about a woman in the parking lot acting hysterical.

“There is some crazy lady out front here,” the caller said in the call, which was released Thursday afternoon. “She’s screaming and hollering, and I don’t know what’s going on.

“She’s all out in the front of the building, and it looks like she’s praying to somebody. I don’t know,” the caller continued.

The clerk told WRAL News that the woman then started walking down the street into fog until he couldn't see her anymore.

Then, he heard two gunshots, he said.

Police officers took a small child from a motel room later Thursday morning.

Authorities marked off about a half-mile of Maitland Drive as a crime scene. Investigators collected evidence, including bullet casings and a bloody shirt. They also interviewed guests at the Motel 6.

State Bureau of Investigation agents were also at the scene.
