RALEIGH, N.C. — A man suspected in a string of recent bank robberies in Raleigh and Durham is believed to be responsible for a Tuesday heist at a Chapel Hill bank, the FBI said Wednesday.

A BB&T branch at 143 E. Rosemary St. in Chapel Hill was held up at about 4:15 p.m. Tuesday. A man handed a teller a note demanding money and fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash, Chapel Hill police said.

No weapon was displayed, and no one was injured.

The same man is suspected of robbing six other banks in Raleigh and Durham in the last two weeks, according to the FBI. In five of those cases, the robber used a note to demand money.

The robber is described as a black man, 35 to 50 years old, about 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a stocky build and dark complexion. He has a beard and mustache and often wears sunglasses and a baseball cap during the robberies.

The man is also suspected in another bank robbery in August 2009, the FBI said.
