A Roanoke Rapids woman was arrested Tuesday on child neglect charges after authorities found two boys locked in a room filled with feces, police said.

Lauren Michelle Sutherland, 20, of 335 W. 4th St., was charged with two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. She was being held Wednesday in the Halifax County jail under a $5,000 bond.

Roanoke Rapids Deputy Police Chief Adam Bondarek said officers received a tip about child neglect and found two boys – ages 3 and 5 – locked in a room in Sutherland's apartment. Fecal matter was on the floor and walls of the room, he said.

"The entire residence was covered in filth. The conditions were abhorrent," Bondarek said.

Bondarek said what his investigators saw in the apartment will stay with them for a long time.

"It can hit home. We have families, too, and children, too," he said.

The Halifax County Department of Social Services was called to assist with the investigation.

Bondarek said investigators are looking into Sutherland's history to determine how long the neglect had been going on.

"Her behavior in this particular incident...is not an isolated incident," Bondarek said.

Sutherland's family members, who were at her apartment on Wednesday, said the home was clean of fecal matter. They said Sutherland is innocent.

The boys were being cared for by Sutherland's family members on Wednesday.

All too often this is what happens when an uneducated white trash skank hooks up with a brotha ...

Unfortunately the little brats are destined to amount to little more than a life time filled with feces anyway.

so tired of these single mothers!

It's not like birth control is hard to get!

Yes I know dead beat dads too- another reason for birth control- how about if your boyfrined actaually marries you and has a job longer than 2 years maybe have kids then- if not- no babies

still think if your on governement assistance it should be a shot given by a doctor once a year!

question why - "Little kids sometimes play in their diapers."

The children were 3 and 5.

The 3 year old might still play in their diaper, although they should no better, but if the 5 year old is doing it too, there's a mental problem there.

And hey - why wasn't the 5-year old in school???

God bless.

Ok, so they take the boys from her and give them to her family who says...

"Sutherland's family members, who were at her apartment on Wednesday, said the home was clean of fecal matter. They said Sutherland is innocent."

Yeah, those boys are real safe with her family.

pfffttt

They sound like a bunch of enablers.

Praying for the boys.

God bless.

Rockguitar said exactly what I was thinking....by the way, where are the boys' father (fathers)?? I see her dad is taking care of them for now. The poor children living in those conditions...what was she thinking?????
