Water found in pumps at Raleigh gas station

Justin Miller said he bought 10 gallons of premium gas from that Han-Dee Hugo's store on Monday evening before his 1998 Range Rover broke down.

“I had no clue what had gone wrong. I had just filled it up with gas not even a mile before it broke down,” Miller said. “All of a sudden the car started shaking, and just cut out in the middle of the road.”

Miller had his vehicle towed to King’s Auto Service in downtown Raleigh to be checked out.

“What we found was that it was full of water,” King’s Auto Service technician Daniel Williams said.

Williams said that Miller's Range Rover had eight to nine gallons of water in the fuel tank.

On Tuesday, officials were seen checking the contents of the gas tanks.

“I’m not sure exactly what happened, but the tanks have water in them, so we stopped selling (gas),” Art Rupard, motor fuels inspection manager for the North Carolina Department of Agriculture, said.

Rupard said four inches of water was found at the bottom of the premium tanks. A little less water was discovered in the regular gas tanks. As a result, officials shut down all the pumps until the problem is corrected.

“It's likely that a large percentage of what he (Miller) was buying was water,” Rupard said.

Miller said fixing his SUV could cost hundreds of dollars.

Han-Dee Hugo's management told WRAL News that customers should contact the store if they have vehicle repairs due to the water in the tanks. They hope to have the pumps cleaned out and back open by Wednesday.
