Suspect in Franklinton slaying arrested in Virginia
Authorities have arrested a suspect in a Franklinton shooting that ended with a wreck that set off an explosion at a gas station.
Posted — UpdatedRashawn "May May" Arrington, 23, was arrested in Virginia on a charge of first-degree murder in the Monday death of Jesse Montague, 27.
Franklinton Police Chief John Green said that Montague was shot one in the back while driving along Sterling Street. His car crashed into an Exxon gas pump, sparking an explosion that sent a 10-foot fireball into the sky.
"Luckily, people were acting in a good manner that kept from additional injuries because one lady almost got crushed," Green said.
The explosion caused an estimated $30,000 in damage to the gas station.
Green said that police and State Bureau of Investigation agents tracked Arrington through his cell phone. Virginia State Police pulled him over and arrested him Tuesday night in Southampton County.
He was returned to North Carolina Wednesday and was expected to make his first court appearance Thursday morning.
North Carolina Department of Correction records show that Arrington was placed on probation June 30 for a drug possession conviction. He also served 18 months in jail for violating his probation stemming from a 2006 conviction for larceny from a person.
Police say Arrington and Montague knew each other and had argued in the past. Green said Montague's death is the first homicide in Franklinton since 1992.
"We have people out here in the world today that don't value other people's lives," said Montague's father, Jesse Montague Sr.
