Fort Bragg leaders to brief residents on infant death investigation
Residents will hear from Fort Bragg leaders Thursday at the first of three town-hall meetings about an investigation into the unexplained deaths of infants in on-post housing.
Posted — UpdatedTen children, ages 8 months to 2 years, have died in military housing on post since 2007, including one house where two infants died within three months.
So far, the investigation has found no common factors in the deaths, military officials said. Medical experts haven't been able to determine the causes of seven deaths, one death was attributed to sudden infant death syndrome, and two remain under investigation.
Fort Bragg officials and Army criminal investigators and pathologists are examining whether faulty construction or environmental factors played a role. Separately, the Consumer Products Safety Commission is testing the homes for Chinese drywall, which has reportedly sickened people across the nation.
Fort Bragg's garrison commander, Col. Stephen Sicinski, and Brigadier Gen. Michael Garrett, chief of staff of the 82nd Airborne, will address the ongoing investigation at the town hall meetings. Members of the investigative team will also take questions.
The town hall meetings will be held at Gordon Elementary School on Thursday, Murray Elementary School on Sept. 21 and Bowley Elementary School on Sept. 23. All meetings begin at 4 p.m.
