Driver injured after Fayetteville police shooting

Police spokesman Dan Grubb said Officer David West was attempting to pull over a red Ford Mustang, identified as stolen, shortly before 11 p.m. on Murchison Road but that the driver refused to stop and turned onto Coley Drive in an attempt to flee.

"When the officer attempted to pull him, he pulled into a driveway and the suspect jumped and ran from the vehicle," Grubb said. "There was gunfire exchanged between the suspect and the officer."

The driver was being treated at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, and no charges had been filed against him Wednesday morning.

West was not injured. The SBI was investigating the incident – a standard procedure any time an officer is involved in a shooting.

FSU spokesman Jeff Womble said the officer-involved shooting had nothing to do with the school.

The shooting marks the second in that area in as many days.  Investigators don't believe the shooting on Sunday and the one Monday night are connected.

On Sunday, Bransford Elmore, 21, told police he was shot during a robbery attempt in the parking lot of University Place Apartments, off Coble Drive and Murchison Road.

A Fayetteville State spokesman said Tuesday that Elmore, who was shot in the buttocks, told officers that two men were about to rob him as he approached the breezeway at University Place. He turned and ran, heard gunshots, and realized he was shot.

Elmore, however, told police he might have accidentally fired his own handgun when he reached into his back pocket.

No arrests have been made.

Dominique Wilson, who has lived at University Place for a couple of years, said she's never felt in danger.

"I've always felt safe. I never had to worry about anything until recently," she said Tuesday.
