Body found in Fayetteville's Mintz Pond

Posted August 23, 2010

A Public Works Commission employee discovered body floating in a company-owned  reservoir off Pamalee Drive in Fayetteville Monday morning, police said.

"They haven't determined the age, race or sex. It appears as though it might be a male, but we're not certain about that right now," said police spokesman Dan Grubb.

Nicole Stiff, a PWC spokeswoman, said the body did not pose a threat to the public water supply.

The employee who made the discovery talked with detectives for much of the afternoon.

“I’m told she knows the area very well. She knows the grounds very well,” Grubb said.

“This area is private. It is not supposed to be entered by anyone,” Grubb said.

Yet  neighbor Robert Lanier, who lives on Boros Drive, said people still get to the water.

“Sometimes they climb over the fence and go out there fishing and everything else,” he said.

Police sent the body to the Office of the Medical Examiner in hopes of pinning down an identity and cause of death.

The interpretation of a comment like that is probably something more like, "I've seen people over there by the water...not sure what they were doing - probably fishing or something."

  • Whatever Geez Aug 23, 2010

why would people jump a fence to go fishing?

The second sentence of the news crawler about this body is so bad that the young woman reading the news stumbled when she tried to say it. "...identity of the person and cause of death" IS? Crawler also gave two street names but no city name.

Actually, if you have been reading the news. You would know this is going on everywhere. How many stories have their been about people being shot outside a nightclub in Raleigh this summer?

  • Comm_Guy Aug 23, 2010

Let's hope it was an unfortunate accident, in which case, someone else would likely already have known.

Otherwise, it's just another notch in Fayetteville's 'cosmopolitan belt' as we welcome our freinds from Atlanta courtesy of BRAC.

"Seriously, what's going on in Fayetteville? Every other day a body is getting discovered in a pond or off an old dirt road."

Its Durham and Rocky Mount's dumping ground.
