Group flying wounded Fort Bragg soldier to wedding
A nonprofit group of volunteer pilots are flying a wounded North Carolina-based major to her niece’s wedding in Oklahoma.
Posted — UpdatedMaj. Yvonne Heib left Fayetteville’s Regional Airport on Tuesday to fly to Enid, Okla. Heib said it will be the first time she has seen her family since she was wounded in Afghanistan in January.
"I'm just looking forward to being with my family," Heib said.
Heib is a nurse who was wounded in a mortar attack two days before her yearlong deployment was to end.
"The mortar landed six feet away from me," she said.
Heib has had five surgeries since the attack. She said her days of working as a nurse are likely done.
"I have limitations in my arm. I can't twist it. My leg, I have permanent nerve damage," she said.
Heib said she will also be in town to see her brother celebrate his 50th birthday.
Veterans Airlift Command flies wounded service members, Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and their families to and from hospitals and events.
Pilot Andre Bohy, who also is president of New York-based Omni Financial, flew Heib to the wedding.
