— A woman was killed and her step-father was injured in a shooting in Smithfield on Thursday afternoon, Johnston County Sheriff Steve Bizzell said.

The shooting occurred at 4:30 p.m. at 80 Neuse Bend Road, where Elizabeth Holmes Reyes had been living with her mother and step-father after separating from her husband, Aldolfo Reyes, authorities said.

Deputies said they believe Aldolfo Reyes entered the home and shot his wife's step-father, Ben Croft, in the arm and leg before shooting and killing his wife. Croft, who suffered non life-threatening injuries, was able to make it to a neighbor's home to get help.

When deputies arrived at the home, Aldolfo Reyes was on the porch holding an infant and a weapon. He surrendered to police, Bizzell said. The infant, who family members said is the couple's son, was not injured.

Aldolfo Reyes was being treated at a local hospital for non life-threatening injuries, Bizzell said. There is no word on how he was injured.

"He was bleeding when we got here. We do not know where his injuries came from," Maj. Benjie Gaddis said.

Croft was being treated at Johnston Memorial Hospital.

Family members said Elizabeth and Aldolfo Reyes had been married for about two years.

Jat and Jackie, I agree. When you have a human with their back against the wall, they tend to do irrational things, like kill. I am not condoning these actions, but it is human nature and we have to fix these problems at the source.

To those who say/have said; 'It's not always the man's fault'....you are absolutely correct which is why I worded my post as I did earlier; never using he/she because I know very well it can, and often does, go both ways. We don't hear about the cases of women abusers to male partners too much and this may have something to do w/ a male ego situation. They don't want anyone to know they were abused by A WOMAN. How embarrassing (read in sarcastic tone); whatever would their buddies say?

Let's stop blaming the justice system. The report said that 2 cases were "voluntarily dismissed" which sounds like she refused to prosecute or something. And as far as her failure to prove, I honestly think the Court would side with her in as much as it can without some sort of proof.

the whole point to the situtation is that a YOUNG mother is gone and her child left without her and the father in jail. This child's life is already been dealt a horrible blow. This man took this girl's life for whatever reason is wrong. No one knows what there life together was/was not like. hope there is justice for the family they will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Clearly in this case, the woman was not protected as needed, or she wouldn't be dead. It really has nothing to do with abuse against both genders in this case, even though it does happen frequently. The child just lost both parents. This is a trajedy.

Jat, it takes two to tango and I am well aware that there are women just as bad as men out there. Mugu was implying that if it were abolished the woman might still be alive. Therefore my comment took that direction - the woman as the victim.

My point is that "abolishing" alimony and child support is not the answer to solving domestic violence. I don't care who you are, man up or woman up, and take responsibility!

Well the justice system stinks denied because she did not have enough proof for protection. Well she would have been better off to have gone and took a concealed weapons class so she could have been packing a piece. I do not believe in volience but when my life and my kids life is in danger it is time to take action. If the courts denied she should have taken the next step go into go to harbor, into hiding or taken in upon herself to take care of her child and herself if that meant taken a gun with ever where. Leaving in fear for your life must be a scary thought. Well now it is to late for protection. And the child is who is suffering now.

JAT, thank you! It is NOT always the men who are the abuser, but who are abused. We hear a lot more about the women who are abused, but the men are so embarrassed that they will not come forward. There are just some mean PEOPLE in this world, and they do not care if you or I know it. It used to be that people were embarrassed if they were outed for behavior issues, now, they act like it is something that they wear proudly!

Well, chasitiea you have apparently chosen to NOT read the comments, rather just YELL your thoughts that are not based in reality. Many of the comments on this particular blog are well thought out and on point; perhaps you should re-read them.
