— Charges have been dropped against a 13-year-old in connection with an April 5 fire that destroyed a daycare under construction, and a 14-year-old was charged in the same case last week.

The 13-year-old was taken into custody after the fire at the Building Blocks Childcare, 55 Hawkesburg Drive. Clayton police referred further questions about the case to the Johnston County District Attorney's Office.

Clayton police are investigating a string of arsons in which six homes, the day care and a school bus have been set on fire since the end of last October. The buildings were all under construction.

Police did not say what connection the 14-year-old may have to the arsons.

"The action may enhance further investigative efforts into all of the arson fires that have occurred over the past seven months," Chief Glen B. Allen said in a statement Wednesday.

Police have said that the 13-year-old was in secure custody when the most recent fires happened on May 2.

A reward of up to $20,000 has be offered for information that leads to an arrest in connection with the arson fires. Anyone who observed suspicious activity or has other information about the fire should call Clayton police at 919-553-4611 or Clayton Crime Stoppers at 919-359-8479.

If all convicted criminals, regardless of age (because they know they are doing wrong), should be punished as an adult would be. You can't teach a lesson with slaps on the wrist. The judicial system needs to quit being wimps and wrap the gavel harder.

Everyone seems to be forgetting about the church fires that happened some time back and the trailer fires from a few years ago. Clayton has a serial arsonist on the loose and its not some dumb kid...

It's nice to see the added patrols, but the truth is that eventually CPD is going to reach a breaking point continuing to put resources into our neighborhood and they will cut back on patrols. Once that happens, whoever is doing this will hit another one. John is right and wrong at the same time. CPD is sitting on a mountain of forensic evidence but they are looking for someone who doesn't have a criminal record and doesn't 'want' to get caught. I went to the community meeting...there was an air of desperation and frustration surrounding law enforcement in attendence. I think the daycare fire was unrelated to the house fires...

It's always sad to see young minds go rotten so early.

I agree. Pray for all young people.

Ha, I see I upset some people...these fires have been going on for 3 years! I live there so I know...cruise by the store at guy road and 42, there will be cop cars chilling...

This shows the mental state these young teenagers where in. They need help. What kind of parents do they have? Someone could have been hurt or killed. Thankfully that did not happen.

John-what's your problem son??? Have the PD done something to you? Or have you done something and got caught??? bingo!!

Most PD haters are that way because they're on the wrong side of the law!!

Clean up you act John-and then join society!!

The building was just being built so I don't think the kids went there, and the houses were under construction, not one house was someone living in it. Also I think the Police do have a clue "John", you know there are more than just one or two officers that work in that town! U take a break at work every now and then! Keep Up the Good Work CPD those of us who pay attention know your working hard!!

These kids could've been students here just a few years ago. It's always sad to see young minds go rotten so early.

Well John if you do have a clue then help out. Unless you are just there to criticize the PD.
