Willow Springs, N.C. — A 16-year-old faces charges of driving while impaired in connection with a hit-and-run that killed a woman Wednesday morning.
State troopers said that Cody Lee Thomas was behind the wheel of a borrowed Cadillac that crashed into a Mazda Protege in Willow Spring, killing Tania Jane Bell, 41, of Raleigh.
Thomas was also charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle, felony hit-and-run, driving left of center and driving without an operator's license. He was being held in the Wake County jail under a $40,000 bond.
Troopers also charged a friend, John McCoy, who they say was driving behind Thomas at the time of the wreck. McCoy, 19, was charged with aiding and abetting a felony hit-and-run.
Troopers said that Thomas drove off the road, then over-corrected and crashed into Bell's oncoming Mazda at Barbour Store and Old Stage roads. Thomas and McCoy drove away, troopers said, but were apprehended on Cindy Street in Angier.
