Teen charged with DWI in fatal hit-and-run

Posted May 13, 2010

— A 16-year-old faces charges of driving while impaired in connection with a hit-and-run that killed a woman Wednesday morning.

State troopers said that Cody Lee Thomas was behind the wheel of a borrowed Cadillac that crashed into a Mazda Protege in Willow Spring, killing Tania Jane Bell, 41, of Raleigh.

Thomas was also charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle, felony hit-and-run, driving left of center and driving without an operator's license. He was being held in the Wake County jail under a $40,000 bond.

Troopers also charged a friend, John McCoy, who they say was driving behind Thomas at the time of the wreck. McCoy, 19, was charged with aiding and abetting a felony hit-and-run.

Troopers said that Thomas drove off the road, then over-corrected and crashed into Bell's oncoming Mazda at Barbour Store and Old Stage roads. Thomas and McCoy drove away, troopers said, but were apprehended on Cindy Street in Angier.

I know i would and i did. Cody had goals he set for him self but then this stuff happen. And about his friend that helped him get away from the scene (as yall would say) was tryin 2 help they both were in shock and didnt know what to do. so people just needs to stop talkin unless they know whats going on. I dont think cody or john should have to do prison time.

This teenager was already too far gone to do anything with. He was under the influence of SOMETHING when he shouldn't be, driving without a license, not in school, ran away when he knew he'd done wrong and who knows what else. It's the best thing he will be in jail for a very long time so he doesn't hurt anyone else.

Teach your children RIGHT and make them accountable from toddler on, people! Don't allow them to run wild just because society says it's the best thing for them to be social and frolic happily around unsupervised. IT IS NOT THE BEST THING OBVIOUSLY.

I am tired of excuses when kids take matters in their own hands and end up in trouble. Then the whining starts about "oh that poor kid, its not his fault". Thats a crock. A lot of people have a hard life. You cant tell me that he didnt know what he was doing was wrong. And if he really didnt know, then all you relatives should have made sure he was never left unattended, maybe this poor woman wouldnt have lost her life. Im sick of excuses.

Tania was my cousin. I live in the UK and got the terrible news today. I can tell you now that this will have destroyed my family in the US, her mother, brother and sons are going through the worst type of hell imaginable. I hope these irresponsible, selfish, cowardly 'kids' get everything that they deserve. There's no excuse.

"Somebody totally dropped the ball in teaching this kid anything."

If this is the same Cody that I remember from Vance Elem, then yes, lots of "somebodies" dropped the ball. Perhaps Principal Rose could have done more. Perhaps all the times I saw him sitting in the office, I could have said something, anything to have changed his path? Or would I have overstepped my bounds as a volunteer?

Are yall really gonna sit here and keep talking about this. that is my Brother yes he was in the wrong. if he had not got into that car knowing he had no experience it would have never happened. he is in the wrong for getting in the car, but as for the accident he didnt just go out and plan to kill someone. i know that family is going through some hard times right now. i feel so bad for the kids. cause she was a innocent women. but thats my 16 year old brother that basically raised himself. me and him just came together like 4 years ago. so how do you think i feel knowing my brother is in jail for a accident that he could have prevented if he didnt get into that car.
