Police: Woman helped destroy evidence in double slayings

Valerie Mayo McGee, 33, was arrested Monday on two counts each of accessory after the fact to first-degree murder and accessory after the fact to armed robbery in connection with the May 7 stabbing deaths of Maxine McCrary, 92, and Nancy Burgess. 65.

Roanoke Rapids police said Wednesday that McGee helped her boyfriend, Tony Maurice Gorham, destroy and conceal evidence after the crime and provided false information to police.

Gorham, 28, fatally stabbed the mother and daughter at McCrary's home, at 311 U.S. Highway 158, authorities said. Investigators arrested him several hours later on two counts of first-degree murder.

Gorham and McCrary were neighbors, and robbery appears to have been a motive in the slayings, investigators said.

McGee's court appearance was brief. She was in the Halifax County jail Wednesday afternoon under a $250,000 bond.

Gorham is being held in the jail without bond.
