Triangle restaurants bank on Mother's Day

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Mother's Day is the most popular day of the year to dine out, according to National Restaurant Association. The observance couldn't come at a better time for Triangle restaurants trying to turn a profit during the down economy.

The Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill was expected to serve 1,000 people Sunday.

"Today we will probably make our whole month,” said Robert Reeves, director of operations for the Carolina Inn.

At Mama Dip's in downtown Chapel Hill, many daughters took their mothers out to eat Sunday. Mama Dip herself even took the day off.

"She's at home. We told her she needs to take her day and rest, but I'm sure that she'll be here sooner or later," said Tonya Council, Mama Dip's granddaughter.

The National Restaurant Association reports that 38 percent of consumers go out to eat on Mother's Day. For many areas, graduation ceremonies added another boost to weekend sales as families headed out to restaurants for celebrations.

"This really helps us close the gap from an economic standpoint,” Reeves said. “People who have never necessarily come to the hotel or dined in the restaurant, this is a chance for them to get a taste of who we are and what we do."

Mother's Day restaurant sales were expected to be 2 percent above last years, according to National Restaurant Association.
