Man charged in Cumberland County double shooting

Posted April 7, 2010

— Cumberland County sheriff’s detectives have charged David Richard Aekins, 26, with murder in a double shooting early Wednesday that left one man dead and another injured.

Aekins, of 7413 Oak Ave., faces one count of first-degree murder and one count of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury with intent to kill.

Investigators say he got in an argument at his home with Gary Dale Burnett, 26, whose address is unknown, and Burnett’s brother Raushawn Poe, 22, of Third Street, at about 1 a.m. Wednesday.

When detectives arrived on the scene, they found Burnett shot to death. Emergency crews took Poe to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center where he underwent surgery to treat his gunshot wound. His condition was not known.

Aekins, Burnett and Poe allegedly became involved in some type of disturbance, and detectives said they were still gathering information.

Aekins was being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center without bond on the first-degree murder charge and a $250,000 bond for the assault with a deadly weapon charge.

He will make a first court appearance at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the Detention Center Courtroom.

A recent report stated that Fayetteville NC has one of the HIGHEST crime rates per sq mile than any other city/town at 118 crimes per sq mile. Last year Fayetteville NC was ranked the 3rd Worst Town to Raise a Family In.

Really? I live in Cumberland and drive to Wake and Durham counties every day to work. Neither of them is as safe as Cumberland.
Last year I worked on a repair for a burned out duplex INSIDE THE BELTLINE where the local druglord had decided he would place shooters at the front and rear, then throw in a flaming cocktail. Probably just reported as a house fire, but that's the way it happened. I saw the bulletholes and my partner repaired them all. I'll take Fayettenam.

Please stop the comments on drugs, illegal activity, etc. Everyone involved was related--cousins--the shooter and the victims. It was a fight about the shooter's girlfriend.

He dude, enjoy your stay at whatever prison you wind up in. And to the LEO's, arrest the victim that survived also. You KNOW he was involved in something illegal. Save yourself some time and take him straight from the hospital to central holding. There are no innocent victims in this crime.

Why do we even pretend to have Gun Control? It seems that absolutely ANYone who wants a gun, has one ! Once again, you see that the 'second amendment' RIGHT, has destroyed a few more lives.
And...I hope they didn't send in their census forms yet, because now they're wrong.....that should get a rise out of someone.

I went to school all my life with the suspect. :|

How very sad that this is happening anywhere at all, but how very scary that it is happening so close to "home". :(

How can you sit there and trash talk someone you don't even know. Drugs this and drugs that. Yes, Fayetteville is known for drugs, we ALL know this. But don't sit there and assume it was about drugs. There are several counties know for drugs. At this time you should be giving you condolences to his family.

Was it drugs or what that caused these two to be shot at someone's home? Who knows at this point, but maybe this man was protecting his home...
