Man killed in police shooting at Duke Hospital

University police Chief John Dailey said that officer Larry Carter and officer Jeffrey Liberto got into an altercation with a man outside the hospital entrance at Erwin Road and Fulton Street.

University police have not released the deceased's identity, but said it did not appear he was an employee, patient or relative of a patient. The body has been sent to the state Medical Examiner's Office in Chapel Hill for an autopsy.

Carter has been employed by Duke Police Department for 23 years, and Liberto has been employed for two years, Dailey said.

Dailey declined to comment further, citing the ongoing investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation and the university police department.

University police said the hospital was secure and patient care was not interrupted.

"There is no ongoing safety or security issue at Duke University Hospital as this was an isolated incident that occurred outside the facility," a statement from police said.

The main hospital entrance was reopened about seven hours after the shooting. Earlier in the morning, Durham police had set up a mobile command center and sent crime scene investigators to the scene.

Duke University Hospital falls under the jurisdiction of the Duke University Police Department, Dailey said.
