RALEIGH, N.C. — The Brides Against Breast Cancer Nationwide Tour of Gowns stopped in Raleigh Sunday.

Sales of donated wedding gowns benefited the Making Memories Breast Cancer Foundation, which fulfills the wishes of people with stage four breast cancer.

Nicole Christos was among the women looking to buy a gown at the event, held at the Sheraton Raleigh hotel at 421 S. Salisbury St.

"There are some beautiful dresses," she said Sunday. "I have picked a lot to try on."

Retailers and designers donated the gowns, which were sold at discounted prices, to help raise money for the foundation.

Joan Michetti, who is suffering from stage four breast cancer, got her wish granted thanks to the Brides Against Breast Cancer campaign.

"This wish is bringing our family all together for a wedding at the beach,” Michetti said.

Michetti, of Clayton, was first diagnosed with cancer in 1989. The disease came back in 2004 and has since spread to her bones.

Michetti's wish is to see her daughter, Toni, and future son-in-law, Chuck, get married on the beach. She said the request, though, is about more than her wishes.

"His (Chuck's) mother, the last time we went to the beach last year, died of cancer," Michetti said. "She asked me before she died if I would bring them back to the beach to get married. So this is kind of my way of fulfilling a promise to her."

The charity is giving the family a beach house for the week to help make Michetti's wish a reality.

"It's important to me to have all the family gathered and all of us celebrating life and the sanctity of marriage,” she said.

Brides Against Breast Cancer raised over $27,000 during the sale this weekend. The Tour of Gowns makes its next stop in Charlotte in two weeks.
