ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — One man died and two others were seriously wounded in a shooting in Rocky Mount late Friday, police said.

Investigators said that Vernon Foster, 35, and Brian Michael Edwards, 22, were playing cards at 2009 Beverly Road when someone knocked on the door shortly after 11 p.m. Foster opened the door, and two men forced their way in.

The men shot and killed Foster, police said.

Edwards got out and ran across the street to a house at 2016 Beverly Road. One of the gunmen followed Edwards, police said, and shot him and an occupant of the house, 61-year-old Harold Sanders.

A 54-year-old woman inside the house was not injured.

Sanders and Edwards were transported to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville. Hospital officials said that Edwards was in fair condition Saturday morning. Police said early Saturday that Sanders was in critical condition.

Police said that robbery is a possible motive in the case. The investigation is ongoing.
