Grinch tries to dim holiday lights display

Posted December 16, 2009

— A suspected Grinch is cutting the wires of a huge holiday lights display at 148 N.C. Highway 98 East in Bunn.

lights Police search for holiday display prankster

Jake Phillips, 68, has been creating the holiday wonderland in his front yard for about 30 years. Visitors come from all around to see it.

“We drove down from Youngsville just to see this. We try to make a point to come here every year,” visitor Don Watts said.

Phillips said it takes him about three weeks to lay out the landscape of lights.

“I enjoy seeing people come by, especially the children. They get a big kick out of it,” Phillips said.

But the last couple of years, someone playing the role of Scrooge has been targeting the holiday lights.

“I've had some of the lights cut, around the driveway, four or five times this year, and last year, it was probably eight to 10 times,” Phillips said.

The display covers about 1.5 acres and when someone cuts the electrical wires, it shuts off some of the lights and dims the holiday spirit, Phillips said.

“It sort of upsets me a whole lot,” he added.

Phillips has called the Bunn Police Department but they don’t yet know who is behind the pranks.

“It upsets me because he puts so much time and effort into it,” Amber McKeithan, Phillips' granddaughter, said.

Phillips said despite the pranks, he isn't going to allow anyone to cut his Christmas spirit short.

“I put it right back together. They're not going to get the best of me yet,” he said. “I like to see the children come around, and eyes brighten up like these lights are. That's the best part.”

Phillips said police have been riding by the display and looking for any suspicious activity. So far, however, no one has been caught.

Phillips plans to keep the holiday display going until Dec. 31. You can view it from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

SweetB, and your comment a few hundred years ago would be enough to have me burned at the stake.

Thanks gods for mental (ethical) evolution. ;-)

To ncwebguy: Maybe I will stop paying my local taxes so that you no longer receive your "socialized" fire protection in case your house burns down. Talk about calling the kettle black...

By the way, last time I checked, those celebrating Hanakah and the other so called non-Christmas "holidays" during the late fall and early winter do not put up lit Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer decorations to celebrate their non-Christmas holidays.

PS, The high school probably has more students than the town has in overall population...and my guess is its not environmentalists, very few prius owners there lol...my guess is its the meth heads in the trailer park down the street...

thought said, "I can't understand why it would bother someone"

    Really? Really?!

This guys puts up 1.5 **Acres** of lights for several weeks of the year, every year...for 30 years. And, you can't fathom ANY reason that this might be incredibly annoying to someone?

I'm guessing that your the kind of guy with an 50' flagpole in his front yard with a parade-sized 'merican flag... ;-)

okay, I live right in the middle of the Meadow lights and this time of year it takes me aleast 20 minutes to get to my drive way from the stop sign which is less than 1/8th of a mile and then I have to wait for several cars to use my drive way as a "good turn around spot" and I get VERY frustrated, but when I hear about little kids in amazement with the lights and seeing santa and getting to get some of that ole time candy, I just think it's Christmas- and then I just turn up my radio with Christmas carols and wait patiently to turn into my driveway! MERRY CHRISTMAS GOLO!

This is obviously the work of a Real American T-Bag Patriot who has decided the general public does not get anything for free, especially light displays.

There is no room in Real America for this blatant socialsist communist tyrany allowed by President Obama to offer something to the community, and it must be stopped.

The government's hands off holiday light policy obviously will not stand for these militiant patriots.

Isn't it great when the unelected determine how to run everyone's lives? Maybe they can do this for healthcare too! Oh wait, they already are!
