Raleigh armed robberies could be linked

Posted September 22, 2009

— Police say a string of violent armed robberies in northeast Raleigh might be linked.

Eleven people have reported being robbed under similar circumstances in six separate crimes from Sept. 5 to Sept. 18. In four cases, victims reported that the assailant hit them with a handgun.

Many of the victims, Raleigh police say, had large amounts of cash on them at the time, leading investigators to believe they might have been targeted.

Each was also walking at the time of the robbery. Police say none of the victims resisted and that the assailants in the cases had no reason to hit them.

"In these cases, at least one of the suspects has been very quick to use that weapon to strike people," Raleigh police spokesman Jim Sughrue said. "So obviously, we need to locate these suspects and arrest them before the cases become even more violent."

Victims were not able to give good descriptions of the suspects because they were wearing masks, Sughrue said. Some reported one robber. Others reported two robbers.

Catherine Johnson's 18-year-old grandson, C.J. Privette, was attacked and robbed on Dansey Drive Sept. 12.

He reported to police that he was headed home from work when two people hit him in the face with a gun, took his wallet, money, shoes and cell phone.

"He said they asked him what all did he have. He said he had nothing, but they searched him anyway," Johnson said. "One of the guys got ill with him and hit him because he had money."

Johnson said her grandson is now recovering but that she doesn't want anyone else to be hurt.

"They don't have any business doing anything like that, because they wouldn't want it to happen to their family members," she said.

Crime Stoppers is offering a reward for information in the case. Anyone with information about any of the crimes should contact the Raleigh Police Department at 919-996-3555 Crime Stoppers at 919- 834-HELP.

Why are these people walking around with large sums of cash, and how would someone else know this? Something is missing here. I feel great if i have 5 bucks on me, and i sure dont go waving it around so others know i have it. Common sense people, use some of your large sums of cash and get some.
