— A Raleigh man is scheduled to go to trial in November on an upgraded charge of second-degree murder in a wreck that killed a 17-year-old Chapel Hill High School graduate more than a year ago.

Justin Caleb Crouse, 20, of 4612 Limerick Drive, was initially charged with felony death by motor vehicle and provisional driving while impaired after the July 12, 2008, wreck that killed Lillian "Lilli" Broox Manis.

Court records show that the provisional DWI was voluntarily dismissed, while the felony death by motor vehicle charge was upgraded to second-degree murder. A judge on Monday set a trial date on that charge for Nov. 9.

Crouse also faces charges of felony assault causing serious bodily injury for injuries sustained in the wreck by Manis' boyfriend, then-17-year-old Philip Iavorov Jurov, of Durham.

He still has his license according to the charges filed, looks like they charged him for not carrying his license with him

"they have updated the story since the morning, the story did not say he was driving without having a drivers license(beacsuehe still had his DL) it said he was driving without atually having the physical piece of plastic on his person calmdownitstheintaaaarnet

Wonderful!!! He killed a girl a year ago but still can drive..."

Where are you getting that, RaceCardBalker? It sounds like calmdown is saying that he had a license AT THE TIME of Lilli's murder, not that he has one now, a year later. Am I missing something in this story, or are several others reading it incorrectly?

affirmative, possibly because the 9/12 event was the biggest non-event that ever existed. Besides, that has nothing to do with the story here.

    provisional driving while impaired

Here is another driving under influence story. All people that continue to drive and kill someone because of their excessive alcohol drinking should be given 50 years in prison.

For those of you who are assuming that the 2nd Degree Murder charge is "trumped up" and Felony Death by Vehicle is the appropriate charge, why don't we wait for the trial and see what kind of additional evidence is out there? There is a HUGE difference between Felony Death by Vehicle and 2nd Degree Murder - and there's bound to be a lot of evidence out there that is being kept behind closed doors until the trial. You can't let your evidence loose in the news where your potential jurors are reading and watching it.

    Oh, and one more thing:
It would be too convenient for me to claim any close relationship with Lilli, but I did know her, as I knew the 2 1/2 year old Durhamite Isabella Zepka killed by a drunk driver in Florida last month. In looking for information on how the prosecution of their killers is progressing, I've been frustrated by how difficult such searches can be. Does anyone know of websites specializing in this, like some cross of America's Most Wanted and MADD?

    2 things I don't understand:
1, what's the difference between "felony death by vehicle" and "2nd degree murder" and what went into the decision to upgrade the charge?
2, it seems like people are commenting on his continuing to drive without a license, and I don't understand where in the story that idea came from.

Why didn't WRAL cover the 9/12 March on DC?

Why are the voices of 1.5 Million People not news worthy to you but Elton John not being allowed to adopt in some third world country is?

"You are right. Killers are not less to blame just because they were driving instead of using a knife"

Really? sure some accidents are cause by stupidity. But some accidents just happen. Would you feel the same way if your mother or child wasn't paying attention for a split second and turned in front of motorcyclist? Would you accept that she is a murderer and should be punished as one?
