COATS, N.C. — A 75-year-old woman died Friday afternoon at a Coats gas station when a car backed over her, authorities said.

The incident occurred at the Hess gas station at the intersection of N.C. Highway 27 and N.C. Highway 55 at about 3:30 p.m., authorities said.

Coats Police Chief Eddie Jaggers said Amanda Bailey Culross, 30, of Fuquay-Varina, was impaired when she backed up over the woman as she crossed the parking lot to pay for her gas. Authorities have not released the name of the victim.

Jaggers said Culross went to back up and "backed completely over the victim."

Witness January Miller arrived just after it happened. Miller said Culross was hysterical and crying following the incident.

Culross faces charges of second-degree murder, child abuse, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and DWI. She had three children in the car at the time, Jaggers said.

Culross was found guilty of DWI and failure to reduce speed in Wake County last year, according to court documents. She is appealing that decision.

Culross was released from jail early Saturday on a $101,000 secured bond. Her first court appearance is Monday.
