N.C.'s delegation reacts to President Obama's speech

Posted Updated

“The core of his plan is simple: provide more security and stability for people who have insurance, provide quality, affordable care to those who don’t, and rein in skyrocketing costs that are crushing American families, businesses and the government itself.

“The President’s plan will protect North Carolinians from unfair insurance industry practices. It’ll prohibit insurance companies from discriminating against someone for a preexisting condition and it’ll stop them from dropping someone’s coverage when they get sick, and need help the most."

--North Carolina Democratic Party Chairman David Young

“I think the President did an effective job of communicating that health care reform will bring security and stability to Americans by reducing costs and preserving choice.

“He made the case that health care reform will bring added security to those who already have insurance by making certain they can keep what they have even if they change jobs and that insurance actually pays for care when they get sick. Reform will make sure working families can afford quality insurance, even if they have pre-existing conditions. This bill will also enable Americans to get preventative care without copayments, so that they can prevent small illnesses from developing into big, expensive medical problems.

--U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-Lillington)

“I applaud the president’s call for action on health care reform, and agree that we must do something. Whatever we do, however, we must get it right. Any plan we consider must promote wellness, prevention, and chronic disease management while expanding access to quality care for all Americans. Further, any health care reform legislation must be financially sustainable over the long term.

“Recently, I have heard from many North Carolinians who are adamant that health care reform not be rushed through Congress. I am hopeful that my colleagues will realize the need to pass responsible health care reform on a bipartisan basis, not just push legislation through without proper debate and consideration of the consequences for all Americans.”

--U.S. Senator Richard Burr (R-North Carolina)

"The President is dedicated, as I am, to strengthening our existing, employer-based system. We agree the reform package must stabilize costs, expand coverage and ensure that a preexisting condition does not prevent anyone from obtaining health insurance. As I have said all along and the President just confirmed – people who like their current insurance and doctors will keep them. The President also wants to create more competition in the insurance market and help small businesses provide health insurance coverage, which I believe are critical components for inclusion in the final bill.

“The President was adamant that health care reform will not add to our federal deficit now or in the future. He specifically said he would not sign a bill that adds one dime to our deficit, which has been a requirement of mine all along."

--U.S. Senator Kay R. Hagan (D-North Carolina)
