Man arrested in fatal Raleigh hit-and-run

Police said John Edward "Eddie" Ogburn was driving a 1998 Jeep north on Old Wake Forest Road while Cory Lamar Henderson was behind him in a 2002 Infiniti. When Ogburn slowed to turn left onto Zachary Brook Lane, Henderson tried to pass, causing the wreck, police said.

Henderson ran from the scene but was arrested shortly after, police said. Police also said they were pursuing Henderson prior to the crash when he was spotted driving recklessly. However, Henderson crashed before officers could pull him over, police said.

“I realized the driver who caused that (wreck) was not in his car. So within minutes there were police with dogs (and) they harnessed this one German shepherd and immediately picked up the trail ... they picked him (Henderson) up within 10 to 15 minutes,” said Pete Zografos, who heard the crash.

Ogburn was pronounced dead at WakeMed. He was a block from his Brook Forest home when his vehicle was struck.

“It's really surreal to be so close to home. It's made me think a lot about when I leave the neighborhood. When I’m driving, to just being really, really careful,” said Hassan Sharif, who lived near the victim.

Two passengers in the Jeep were also injured, police said. Kristen Knutson, 29, of Raleigh, has been released from WakeMed, while Jennifer Ragone, 27, of Southern Pines, was listed in good condition Saturday.

Arrest warrants charged Henderson with two counts of felony serious injury by vehicle and one count each of felony death by vehicle, felony hit-and-run causing serious injury or death, resisting an officer and driving with a revoked license.

Jail officials said he was also charged with driving while impaired, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury or death, reckless driving and speeding.

Henderson was being held in the Wake County Jail under a $130,000 bond. His first court appearance was set for Monday. According to state Department of Correction records, Henderson has a DWI conviction in Wake County from 2004.

Ogburn was a graduate of East Carolina University. He worked at the SAS Institute. He is survived by his mother, who lives in Virginia.

Neighbors plan to gather at 10 a.m. Sunday to clean up the accident site and remember Ogburn.
