TARBORO, N.C. — The Sara Lee plant in Tarboro announced an $11 million expansion project on Wednesday that is expected to create about 45 new production jobs by the end of the year.

Gov. Bev Perdue, who helped make the announcement, said the company is investing its own money and received no incentive from the state.

“Every single job that comes to the county helps,” Edgecombe County Manager Lorenzo Carmon said. “We’re just proud of the fact that Sara Lee picked Edgecombe County to continue to grow.”

Sara Lee’s plant, at U.S. Highway 258 S., is one of the county’s largest employers.

Edgecombe County has one of the highest unemployment rates in the state at 16.6 percent.

The state’s unemployment rate was at 11 percent in June.
