Friends and family held a memorial service on Saturday for a fighter pilot killed in Afghanistan.

Captain Mark McDowell died when his F-15E Strike Eagle crashed in eastern Afghanistan in July.

The memorial service was at the First Baptist Church in Belmont Saturday afternoon.

McDowell was assigned to the 336th Fighter Squadron at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. The squadron's F-15E Strike Eagle jets and about 300 personnel, including air and ground crews, deployed from the Goldsboro base in April for a four-month tour of duty.
