GOLDSBORO, N.C. — For some seniors, a trip to the grocery store may be out of the question. Many are unable to drive, while some can't afford the gas.

However, Wayne County farmer Travis Uzzell is trying to help by bringing fresh fruits and veggies to the seniors.

Uzzell brings the produce by the truck load to the Wayne County Senior Center at 100 S. John St. in Goldsboro on Tuesdays.

“He comes quite often, bringing good stuff,” customer Ethel Dove said.

The truck often has tomatoes, watermelons, cantaloupes and potatoes.

“There's (also) zucchinis and squashes and corn, and everything will be wonderful,” customer Dora Bowden said.

Having the farmers market come to the senior center is a big help, the seniors say, since many can't travel.

“Senior citizens can't get out and run around like other folks,” Dove said.

“Going to the grocery store stresses me out,” customer Ruth Hoffman said.

Uzzell says he charges the seniors discounted prices for fruits and veggies. He says he usually sells about $100 worth of produce at the center.

“Somebody was looking after me when they sent him (Uzzell) down here,” Hoffman said.

Uzzell also sells produce at the Wayne County Health Department on Wednesdays.
