— The community rallied to help a Fairmont Middle School principal shot in the face on his way to work, holding a motorcycle ride Sunday to raise money to pay for his medical bills.

James Hunt Bikers help out wounded principal

Someone in a pickup truck shot James Hunt along Davis Road April 9. Despite a shattered mouth and nose, the former Marine drove 15 miles to a hospital in Lumberton.

Relatives said Hunt will need several reconstructive surgeries, in addition to his initial treatment at Southeastern Regional Medical Center and Duke University Hospital.

His family has been living in a Durham hotel due to safety concerns since the shooting, and Hunt was denied worker's compensation.

On Sunday, dozens of bikers took to the streets for a fun run to raise money for Hunt's mounting expenses.

"The town of Fairmont is behind Mr. Hunt, not just the people at the school," retired teacher Margaret Inman said.

The scenic route took bikers from downtown Pembroke to Lumberton.

Robeson County Sheriff Kenneth Sealey has said his office is looking into several leads and is being assisted by the State Bureau of Investigation. Hunt has said he believes the shooting was school-related and possibly gang-related. Sealey has said it's not clear if there was gang involvement.

Anyone with information that could help the investigation should call the Robeson County Sheriff's Office at 910-671-3100.

God bless them for helping out a GOOD MAN. Shame on the school district. I have had threats from my students in the past which is why I don't live where I teach. Now I'm try to take different roads to and from school as well since this incident. I hope they catch whoever did this and they serve a long/hard sentence.

Thank god for those bikers helping out. As sad as it is, the key words were "shot while in route to his job" I'm sure that why he's not able to receive worker's comp.It also sounds strange as to why he was shot.

Great job bikers! Glad someone is being proactive! Maybe they can find the white truck with the punk inside since the law has not. I believe (sadly) the gang theory. He stirred the pot at his school and "pot stirrers" are not welcome in most circles.

Space Mountain, he may know who shot him. But that doesn't mean he is doing anything wrong or hiding information. He may have already provided to the police who he believes could have been involved. But he can't release that information publicly if the police are currently investigating these individuals.

Am I the only one that thinks there is something fishy about this whole thing? Why would someone just shoot him for no reason? I am not buying the gang story. I would not be surprised if it came out he knew who shot him. Maybe he was fooling around with some guy's wife.

Sounds like some who post don't understand workmans comp. 1st its paid by the employer and not the employee. 2nd the rates are related to claims. His state medical insurance should be paying the bills. Is there an address to make a contribution?
