Lumberton, N.C. — A fire swept through a Lumberton fertilizer plant Sunday morning.
Someone riding by the Southern States plant at 875 Old Whiteville Road saw the flames shortly before 9:30 a.m. and called the fire department.
As many as 150 firefighters from 17 different departments responded to the fire.
At about 10:45 a.m., firefighters decided to let the fire burn out due to the chemicals inside the plant. However, they said the chemical gases were not a concern for nearly residents.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation Sunday afternoon.
There were no injuries.
