Authorities hope pizzas can solve slaying

Matthew Scott, 25, was shot at his Ajax Drive home in the Gray's Creek community on March 31 and died at a hospital. A woman who was in the house at the time told authorities she heard a struggle and a loud, popping noise.

Detective Nan Trogdon came up with the idea of taping fliers seeking information about the case onto pizza boxes, and a Domino's restaurant on N.C. Highway 87 agreed to distribute more than 200 fliers this weekend on take-out and delivery orders in the Gray's Creek area.

“I know on Friday and Saturday night people order a lot of takeout, especially pizza,” Trogdon said.

“We deal with a lot of customers and a lot of households and it is really easy and really quick to get the word out there,” said Lonnie Dunn, of Domino’s Pizza.

Authorities believe two men walked up to Scott's home prior to his death.

“Right now, it appears to be a robbery,” Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. John Brown said. “We have information that two black males were involved in it.”

Ruth Scott hopes authorities can find her son's killer.

"It has just destroyed me. It took away my life," Ruth Scott said. "I wish anybody who knew something would come forward with some news."
