CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Cabarrus County activity bus carrying 33 children and 12 adults flipped over Wednesday morning just west of center city Charlotte, WBTV reported.

Charlotte Fire Department spokesman Mark Basnight said the injuries do not appear to be serious. Ambulances took some of the students to local hospitals.

The accident happened around 10 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 77 between the exits for Morehead and Lasalle streets.

A Cabarrus County Schools spokeswoman said the students were from Cox Mill Elementary and were on their way to Camp Thunderbird in southwest Charlotte for an overnight field trip.

A man who drove by the scene told WBTV it appeared that the children were able to get off the bus using the emergency doors.
