RALEIGH, N.C. — Home-security companies say consumer interest is on the rise in tough economic times.

"The security industry, from the people that I know in this industry – we're definitely growing," said Brian Smith, owner of Priority Security in Raleigh.

Smith said his sales have increased as much as 40 percent in the last six months. In a bad economy, he said, the public perception is that crime is on the rise.

"There's just an overall general concern that, as things get worse or have gotten worse, that (people) don't want to come home and somebody's in their closet," Smith said.

That's why Debbie Zicca said she invested in a state-of-the-art security system for her home.

"I sleep better at night knowing that the house is secure," she said. "There's no telling what people will do."

Smith said a basic home security system costs anywhere from $25 to $40 a month.
